After the Civil War, Black horsemen helped build the foundation of American horse racing—many rising into prominent roles as jockeys, trainers, and breeders.

But by the early 1900s, those opportunities were systematically taken away. What remained was the work behind the scenes—the farms, the barns, the backstretch.
